STILL, 2014
STILL, 2014 began in my mind as a challenge. A challenge to affix a permanent sculptural object to an abandoned gas lamppost. The post stood approximately thirty-six inches high, and had two large bolts protruding 4” above the top surface - a readymade pedestal with anchor points included.
Over the course of two to three years, I contemplated what to place. The lamppost is situated across the street from the 1871 West Roxbury Soldiers Memorial - commemorating the deaths of 23 West Roxbury men who died in the conflict. Yet where are we - Northerners - in terms of the creation of an equitable society? While slavery ended, economic disparity and outright racism persist.
The sculpture features a hoodie sweatshirt, empty and tossed on a the ground - a reference to the murder of Trayvon Martin. Titled “STILL, 2014” the work was installed just a handful of weeks before Michael Brown was murdered in Ferguson, MO. STILL reference a lack of movement, and also that something has not changed.
